Our Physicians
All of the physicians of Retina Associates of Cleveland are Board Certified in Ophthalmology. They have received additional extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous. All of our doctors have been and continue to be involved in medical research and in the training and teaching of residents and other ophthalmologists.

Lawrence J. Singerman, MD, FACS, FICS
Dr. Singerman completed his ophthalmology training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland and his retinal training at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
He is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a medical student advisor. He is also a voluntary professor of clinical ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami School of Medicine.
Dr. Singerman founded the Macula Society in 1977 and has been its executive secretary from then until the present. He is a past president of the Ohio Ophthalmological Society, the Cleveland Ophthalmologic Society, and the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland. He has served as the Vice Chairman of the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Hernando Zegarra, MD
Dr. Zegarra received his BS and MD degrees from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru. He completed his ophthalmology and retinal training at the Cleveland Clinic and Devers Eye Clinic of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Portland, Oregon.
Dr. Zegarra's principal areas of interest are retinal diseases, hereditary disorders of the retina, laser treatment, and retinal detachment surgery.

Z. Nicholas Zakov, MD, FACS
Dr. Zakov received his BA degree from Kenyon College and his MD degree from Columbia University. He completed his ophthalmology training at the Cleveland Clinic and did his retinal training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, Harvard University.
He is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is president of the American Retina Foundation and founding president of the American Society of Ocular Trauma. Dr. Zakov is also past president of the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the largest vitreo-retinal organization in the world, and of the Cleveland Ophthalmological Society.
His principal areas of interest are vitreous and retinal diseases, intraocular tumors, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

Scott D. Pendergast, MD
Dr. Pendergast received his BA degree from Case Western Reserve University and his MD degree from Boston University. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina and completed his training with a retinal fellowship at William Beaumont Medical Center in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Dr. Pendergast has special interest in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, and macular edema.

Joseph M. Coney, MD

Joseph M. Coney, MD
Dr. Coney received his BS degree in biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his MD degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western Reserve University and a medical retina fellowship in diabetic retinopathy at the Joslin Diabetes Clinic of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Coney also finished a two-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the Vitreoretinal Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. He is secretary of the Ophthalmology section of the National Medical Association and serves on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Coney manages a wide spectrum of medical and surgical retinal diseases. His primary interests are intraocular lasers, retinal detachment and vitreoretinal surgery. His special interests include clinical research of new medical and surgical management of advanced diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, and age-related macular degeneration.
