Trial Description Summary
A randomized controlled study to determine if formal diabetes education provided in an ophthalmology office vs. no formal education given in an ophthalmology office will lead to patients achieving better glycemic control.
• Retina Associates of Cleveland has been randomized to provide formal diabetes education.

Age: 18 or older

Eligibility Criteria
 Inclusion Criteria
                 Age: 18 or greater
                 Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes
                 Willing and able to make follow up appointments

 Exclusion Criteria
        OPHTHAMLIC EXCLUSION:
                 Prior complete PRP in both eyes.
                 Diabetes related vitrectomy in both eyes
                 Advanced visual acuity loss in both eyes prohibiting ability to read study materials.

        GENERAL MEDICAL EXCLUSION:
                Known HbA1c (by pt. report or record at time of enrollment) <7.5% with in prior 6 months.
                Participation in any other intervention study
                Initiation of insulin treatment within 3 months from date of enrollment.
                Significant Renal Disease including use of erythropoietin, dialysis or kidney transplant
