Trial Description
The objectives of this study are as follows:
- To evaluate the effect of high supplemental doses of lutein/zeaxanthin and omega 3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPFA) nutritional supplements on the progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- To assess the effect of high supplemental doses of lutein/zeaxanthin and Omega 3 LCPFA nutritional supplements on moderate vision loss
- To evaluate the effect of eliminating beta-carotene and reducing zinc in the original AREDS nutritional supplement formulation

Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Large drusen in both eyes or large drusen in one eye and advanced age-related macular degeneration (neovascular AMD or geographic atrophy) in the other eye
- Several others
Exclusion Criteria
- Diabetic retinopathy (unless fewer than 10 microaneurysms and/or small hemorrhage)
- Several other retinal diseases
- Certain retinal or ocular surgeries, for example, laser trabeculectomy, cryosurgery (except for peripheral retinal hole), lamellar keratoplasty, pterygium surgery
- Cataract surgery less than 6 months before study entry
- Several others
