Dr. Schartman performs first Encelto™ implant procedure in Ohio

Retina Associates of Cleveland, Inc (RACI) is proud to announce that Jerome P. Schartman, MD and his surgical team performed the first Encelto™ implant surgical procedure in the state of Ohio on Friday, December 12. This milestone marks a significant advancement in care for patients living with Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 (MacTel), a rare and progressive retinal disease that affects central vision.

Approved by the FDA in March of 2025, Encelto™ is the first treatment shown to slow the loss of photoreceptors in MacTel via proteins called recombinant human ciliary neurotrophic factor (rhCNTF). The procedure involves the implantation of the Encelto™ device (the size of a grain of rice) into the outer corner of the eye.

“Our team is honored to bring this groundbreaking therapy to patients in Ohio,” said Dr. Schartman. “MacTel has long been a condition without effective treatment options, and Encelto represents a major step forward in preserving vision and improving quality of life for those affected.”

The procedure was performed at Cleveland Eye and Laser Surgery Center where the retina surgical team has undergone specialized training in delivering this advanced therapy. RACI is among the first centers in the United States offering this treatment.

RACI has been involved in the research of this treatment since 2011. The clinical trial studies results showed that Encelto™ significantly slowed the loss of macular photoreceptors over 24 months in patients with MacTel.

“This achievement highlights our commitment to bringing the newest and most innovative retinal therapies to our community,” said David G. Miller, MD, President of RACI. “We are proud of Dr. Schartman and the entire surgical team for leading the way in introducing this important advancement.”

RACI has more Encelto™ surgeries scheduled for the remainder of the year.
